DSA Chapters across Indiana call on Gov. Holcomb to extend the eviction moratorium and to cancel rent, utilities and mortgage payments for the time of the coronavirus epidemic

Democratic Socialists of America chapters across Indiana have been working alongside other activist groups in Indiana toward a rent jubilee since the coronavirus pandemic shutdown in mid-March. Hoosiers have sent postcards and emails and made phone calls to the governor’s office demanding that rent and utilities and mortgage payments be forgiven during this time.

DSA chapters of Indiana call on Gov. Holcomb to extend the eviction moratorium for the duration of the crisis. Extending the eviction moratorium is only a stopgap on the way to Hoosiers losing a place to live if the eviction moratorium is the extent of the Governor’s plan to ensure housing for all. Hoosiers will not be able to make up for lost wages. If the moratorium is lifted when the crisis is over, Hoosiers will lose their homes. Rent must be canceled to avoid long-term chronic houselessness in Indiana.
