Central Indiana DSA calls for canceling rent as Gov. Holcomb extends the eviction moratorium to August 14

Central Indiana Democratic Socialists of America and other activist groups in Central Indiana have been working since the coronavirus pandemic shutdown in mid-March toward a rent jubilee. Hoosiers have sent postcards and emails and made phone calls to the governor’s office demanding that rent and utilities and mortgage payments be forgiven during this time.

Extending the eviction moratorium is only a stopgap on the way to Hoosiers losing a place to live if the eviction moratorium is the extent of the Governor’s plan to ensure housing for all. Hoosiers will not be able to make up for lost wages. If the moratorium is lifted when the crisis is over, Hoosiers will lose their homes. Rent must be canceled to avoid long-term chronic houselessness in Indiana.
